Conspiracy Prophets Say Tonight’s ‘Black Moon’ Signals End of the World

Some end times prophets are claiming that tonight’s “black moon” signals the end of the world.

For the first time since 2014, a “black moon” will be visible. A black moon means a second new moon in a single month.

"The term Black Moon has several definitions, but one of the most common definitions is the second new moon in a calendar month. This is similar to the well-known Blue Moon, which is the name given to the second full moon in a calendar month," according to Accuweather. "Since it is a new moon, it will not be a visible event as the side of the moon that is illuminated will be facing away from the Earth. The last time that two new moons fell in the same month was March of 2014."

Charisma News reports that a number of end times prophets and conspiracy theorists interpret the black moon as a sign of the world’s imminent end.

They point to scriptures such as Matthew 24:29, Luke 21:25-26, and Revelation 6:12-13 to make their case.

According to an article from "Signs of the End Times," "You could say that when these celestial signs happened, God began the final chapter of human history. And since then we have been getting closer and closer to the end of time. The signs as you can see from this site are getting stronger and we are sure to see Jesus return soon. So let's look at the fulfillment of these Biblical celestial signs."

However, scientists discount these theories and offer a different explanation:

"At its 'new moon' phase, the moon is always black. It happens at that time of the month when the moon passes through the same part of the sky as the sun and as such, the moon's dark or unilluminated side faces Earth," Space.com explains. "So there really is nothing to see."
