Actor Denzel Washington recently shared about his commitment to his Christian faith in a keynote address he delivered at the Church of God in Christ during the annual “We Care” Charities banquet.

According to Christian Today, Washington grew up in a loving Christian home. From a young age, he was inspired by the example of his father who was a pastor and had a great love for the Lord.

“My father, my earthly father, Denzel Washington Sr. was a pastor for the Church of God in Christ for 60 years," Washington said.

Washington said that he remembers his father being so excited to attend Convocation in Memphis Tennessee where he would travel once a year from the family home in upstate New York.

Although his father has since passed away, Washington says he attends the banquet in Memphis in honor of his father.

Washington also shared that when he was younger he got terrible grades in school, but was told by a woman from his church that ‘You are going to preach.’

"In this 40-year journey, I guess she was right,” said Washington. “Through my work I have spoken to millions of people. In 2015, I said I'm no longer just going to speak through my work. I'm going to make a conscious effort to get up and speak about what God has done for me."
