Leading doctors from the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK are advocating for womb transplants for transgender women.

According to the Daily Mail, the procedure of womb transplants is still being fully developed, but many medical professionals believe in a few years it will be possible. Already, at least five babies have been born to womb-less women after they received womb transplants from donors--procedures which were performed by doctors at Gothenburg University in Sweden.

But while some doctors believe this procedure will soon be more widespread, others have raised concerns over its ethical implications, as well as the possibility of taxpayer funding for the procedures.

“Most taxpayers will not think this is a good use of resources. It raises profound ethical and moral issues that will have an impact on women’s rights. It will impinge on the meaning of motherhood and womanhood,” stated women’s campaigner Laura Perrins.

Many transgender women, however, welcome this medical advancement as it will provide them with an opportunity to experience pregnancy and childbirth--something which is so often considered a quintessential facet of womanhood.

Transgender man Hayden Cross, who was born a female, recently made headlines when he postponed his sex change in order to get pregnant.

The new medical technology of womb transplants would allegedly make it possible for those like Cross to pursue their chosen gender identities, while still being able to bear children.
