Former state governors Mike Huckabee and Martin O’Malley have dropped out of the presidential race after failing to gain traction in Iowa.

CNN reports that both candidates needed to gain significant support in Iowa in order to bolster their campaigns, but after failing to do so, both announced the end to their campaigns.

"This fight continues," O'Malley said at a rally in Des Moines, Iowa. "We fought very, very hard in order to give the people a choice, and the people made their choice tonight."

O’Malley did not state who he will be supporting in the race now that he has suspended his own campaign, although he did denounce Donald Trump’s “racist and fascist rhetoric.”

Huckabee announced the suspension of his campaign on Twitter.

“I am officially suspending my campaign," the former Arkansas governor tweeted. "Thank you for all your loyal support. #ImWithHucK"

In 2008 Huckabee won Iowa, but his campaign ultimately faltered.
