Leaders in the Church of South India are undertaking a project to create “green schools” with the aim of caring for the environment.

ChristianToday.com reports that representatives from 23 dioceses participated in the three-day meeting on the environment which took place on World Environment Day (June 5).

The Green Schools Project emerged out of that meeting.

"We have taken a decision to make 1,000 schools of CSI into Green Schools this year. While everyone, everywhere asserts the importance of 'learning to live sustainably', environment remains a peripheral issue in the formal schooling system," Professor Mathew Kosy Punnackadu, an environmental scientist, activist and writer who initiated the movement, stated.

The Green Schools Project hopes to put into practice teaching about the environment, rather than simply talking about what should be done.

The project will be run in collaboration with the Center for Science and Environment in New Delhi, which will equip teachers to teach eco-friendly ways to interact with the earth.

“Schools will become Green Schools, students will study environmental science and will get good eco-insights, teaching and study will become more interesting and the results of the schools will improve," said Punnackadu.

The project aims to influence 1,000 schools in South India.
