A board of investigators found that former president of the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) Bill Gothard’s alleged behavior around teen girls was “inappropriate,” but not “criminal.”

Gothard was accused of sexual harassment by dozens of women; they documented their stories of inappropriate touching on the website Recovering Grace. The the board of IBLP leaders called his behavior “inappropriate” but “no criminal activity was discovered.”

The members agreed that “at this time” Gothard “is not permitted to serve in any counseling, leadership or board role within the IBLP ministry.” It is unclear if Gothard will be permitted in a leadership role in the future.

In the 1980s, Gothard’s brother was involved in affairs was secretaries at the ministry; Gothard was accused of failing to take action, despite knowing about the behavior. Gothard took a three-week voluntary suspension at the time, and was allowed to return as president.

In an interview Gothard said, “I respect and honor the board, and my number one goal right now...is to go back to the ones that I have offended and ask their forgiveness.”
