Israel attacked Syrian troops with air raids Sunday night, killing 10 Syrian soldiers and destroying a command center reports CBC News. The airstrikes were in response to Syria’s cross-border attack the day before which killed an Israeli teenager.

Israel’s military said “direct hits were confirmed” on two tanks, two artillery batteries, and the Syrian 90th brigade command center.

On Saturday June 21, 14-year-old Mohammed Karaka was killed at the Israel-Syria border, the first deadly incident at the border since the start of the Syrian civil war. It is unknown if the gunfire that killed Karaka was from Syrian troops or a rebel group.

“Yesterday’s attack was an unprovoked act of aggression against Israel, and a direct continuation to recent attacks that occurred in the area,” Lt. Col. Peter Lerner Israeli military spokesman said.

Lerner said that the Israeli military “will not tolerate any attempt to breach Israel’s sovereignty and will act in order to safeguard the civilians of the state of Israel.”
