Jerry Falwell Jr., the Chancellor of Liberty University, said he has been asked by President Trump to lead a higher education reform task force and that he has accepted this position.

According to CBN News, Falwell said he spoke with Trump’s Chief Strategist Steve Bannon about the role and that the aim will be “to get the government off the backs of higher education.”

"I think the Department of Education is intruding far too much into the accreditation process and into how colleges are operated," Falwell told CBN News during Trump’s inauguration.

"They micro-manage the colleges and they make the student loan process much more difficult than it has to be. That's one area I will be focused on," Falwell continued.

Falwell, an early supporter of Trump, was reportedly asked to be the Education Secretary in the Trump administration, but declined this position due to personal reasons of not wanting to relocate his family to Washington D.C. and not wanting to be too far away from Liberty University.

Falwell has said that he believes Education Secretary nominee Betsy DeVos is a great choice for that position.

Falwell will reportedly meet with Trump to discuss the higher education task force today (Feb. 1).
