KY Clerk Who Refuses to Issue Same-sex Marriage Licenses Found in Contempt of Court

Kim Davis, the Rowan, KY county clerk who refused to issue same-sex marriage licenses is being held in contempt of court.
NBC News reports that District Judge David Bunning has ordered that Davis be jailed until she complies with federal law.
Davis still refuses to issue same-sex marriage licenses based on her religious beliefs, stating that issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples would “violate God’s definition of marriage.”
Davis is an Apostolic Christian and believes in the traditional definition of marriage between one man and one woman.
Many protesters were calling for Davis to step down from her position as county clerk because she was unwilling to perform the requirements of her job.
As a county clerk, however, Davis cannot be voted out of office until state legislators reconvene in the State House in January.
Protesters outside the courthouse in which Davis was found in contempt of court clashed with each other, some backing Davis’s convictions while others criticized her for discriminating based on her religious beliefs.
NBC News reports that Davis’s background was revealed this week.
She was reportedly divorced three times and had children out of wedlock before being converted to Christianity and turning her life around. She is a registered Democrat who held a position as deputy clerk for 27 years before voters elected her as county clerk last year.
