A hostage situation in Charleston, South Carolina has resulted in the death of one person. The shooter reportedly has been shot and critically wounded by police.

According to CNN.com, the incident occurred when a disgruntled employee shot and killed a person at a Charleston restaurant. Another person was injured in the incident.

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg quickly released a statement following the shooting:

"This is not act of terrorism. This is not a hate crime. It's a disgruntled employee who has come on the scene of his employment."

The suspect was reportedly holding hostages inside the downtown Charleston establishment before police were able to take control of the situation.

Patrons and owners of nearby establishments were told to vacate the premises.

"Right now the streets are full of SWAT and police and people heavily armed. They are blocking off the whole block," said Sarah Cobb, owner of nearby MOSA boutique.
