Planned Parenthood is currently the largest provider of abortions in the United States, though 55 percent of Americans do not realize that the organization offers this service. The company even considered the word taboo in the past. However, the nationwide abortion rate is dropping, and Planned Parenthood CEO, Cecile Richards made a statement in February that the organization “is proud to provide abortion services for women.”
In early 2014, Planned Parenthood sent a letter to members expressing the services offered, but failed to mention abortion. Instead, the letter referred to abortion as one of “many other essential reproductive health services.”
In truth, 92 percent of services provided to pregnant women at Planned Parenthood are abortions. One year totaled to 333,964 abortions performed by the company, the equivalent of one abortion every 95 seconds for 365 days. Abortions outnumber adoptions through the organization 149 to 1.
Stacy Anderson, director of public affairs for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Montana said in a statement that no woman plans to have an abortion. Despite her opinion, Planned Parenthood made $170 million in 2012 from performing abortions alone, 55.7 percent of the income for the year.
Though Planned Parenthood is proud to offer abortions for pregnant women, they do not support the meaning of abortion itself.
