Poll: Majority of Americans Support Repealing and Replacing Obamacare

A new poll has found that the majority of Americans are in favor of repealing and replacing Obamacare.

President-elect Donald Trump and other Republicans have criticized Obamacare and pointed out its failings throughout the 2016 presidential election. Now that Trump has won and Republicans have a majority in Congress, they have an opportunity to do something about the healthcare law.

According to The Blaze, the majority of Americans support Republicans’ efforts to repeal the law and replace it. A poll conducted by the American Action Network revealed that 54 percent of respondents said they would like Obamacare to be completely repealed or significantly changed. Forty-three percent said the law is fine as it is or requires only minor changes.

However, even more (70 percent) were in favor of replacing the law if it was simultaneously replaced with a new law and if Americans would be allowed to keep their existing coverage for the period of transition.

A majority of those polled also said that there were two aspects of Obamacare that should be kept and not replaced; namely, that healthcare providers cannot refuse to cover those with pre-existing health conditions (92 percent) and that children should be able to stay on their parents’ health insurance through the age of 26 (79 percent).

Obamacare fell out of favor with many Americans particularly in the past year as costs skyrocketed. On a national scale, Obamacare health insurance premiums increased by 20 percent. In some areas of the country, that percentage was even more significant. In Arizona, premiums increased by 116 percent.

Republicans in Congress say that repealing and replacing the healthcare law is one of their top priorities and will be addressed soon after Trump is inaugurated on Jan. 20.
