Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has announced that he is dropping out of the presidential race after receiving only one percent of the vote in the Iowa caucuses.

Fox News reports that Santorum discussed the decision with his wife, Karen, and they ultimately decided that it would be best to suspend the campaign and put their efforts into supporting a candidate who had a greater chance of winning the Republican nomination.

“We decided that we could be better advocates in supporting someone who shared those values and will do better in this race,” Santorum told Fox News’ Greta Van Susteren in an interview.

Santorum placed eleventh in the Iowa caucuses, though he had won the caucuses when running for president four years ago.

After dropping out of the race, Santorum officially endorsed Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, stating, “We wanted to find a candidate that really espoused the values we believed in."

Other candidates have also dropped out of the race after the Iowa caucuses. Republican candidates Rand Paul and Mike Huckabee suspended their campaigns, as did Democratic candidate Martin O’Malley.
