Kent Dobson, pastor of Mars Hill Bible Church, will be resigning because he says, “being a pastor at a church is not really who I am.”

Writing for Patheos.com, Scot McKnight reports that Dobson announced on November 22 that he will be stepping down from his position as pastor of the church and successor of controversial pastor Rob Bell this spring.

Dobson resigned with no clear direction as to what he will do next and says there is no “secret reason” for his resignation.

He did say, however, that “I have always been and I’m still drawn to the very edges of religion and faith and God. I’ve said a few times that I don’t even know if we know what we mean by God anymore. That’s the edges of faith. That’s the thing that pulls me. I’m not really drawn to the center. I’m not drawn to the orthodox or the mainstream or the status quo.”

“And I think all churches have to have a center,” Dobson continued. "It helps them define who they are, but I’m always wandering out to the edge and beyond.”

Dobson said he will keep teaching and “give the best sermons I can” through the transition period of finding a new pastor.
