Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker has dropped out of the 2016 presidential race. In an announcement Monday (Sept. 21), Walker said he dropped out of the running to clear the field for other Republican candidates.

CNN reports Walker had recently plummeted in polls after two disappointing appearances in Republican debates. In a CNN/ORC poll released Sunday, the governor failed to reach even half of one percent among Republican voters.

In a statement, Walker said, "Today, I believe that I am being called to lead by helping to clear the field in this race so that a positive, conservative message can rise to the top of the field. With this in mind, I will suspend my campaign immediately.”

"I encourage other Republican presidential candidates to consider doing the same so that the voters can focus on a limited number of candidates who can offer a positive, conservative alternative to the current front-runner," he continued, taking a dig at Donald Trump. "This is fundamentally important to the future of our party, and, more important, the future of the country."

SRN News reports Walker decided to leave the race while in church listening to a sermon about Bible figures who led in unusual ways.

The Republican field has now narrowed to 15 candidates, down from 17 candidates at its height. Texas Gov. Rick Perry became the first Republican to exit the race two week ago, saying that he was submitting to God’s will.
