Senate Holds Confirmation Hearing for Ambassador-at-Large for Religious Freedom

On Wednesday, October 4, former Senate member and Governor Sam Brownback went before the Senate for his confirmation hearing as US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom. In July, President Trump named Brownback as his nomination for the position. The office is responsible for "monitor[ing] religious persecution and discrimination worldwide," in addition to developing programs and executing policies which encourage religious freedom. This position is crucial in leading the US government's efforts to promote religious freedom around the world.

Former US representative and respected religious freedom advocate, Frank Wolf, spoke in strong support of Governor Brownback and his pursuit of international religious freedom. Throughout the hearing, Senate Democrats, Tim Kaine and Jeanne Shaheen, directed questions to Brownback on his reputation regarding domestic religious freedom. Senator Rubio and Senator Gardner, however, took a different line of questioning, asking for details on how the governor will advocate for religious liberties throughout the world.

Gov. Brownback's hearing was adjourned, leaving the record open so that committee members could ask follow-up written questions of the nominees. If Brownback is confirmed by the Senate, he will be replaced as governor by Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer. No date has been announced for a vote on the confirmation.

ICC's Advocacy Manager, Nate Lance, said of the hearing, "The persecuted Church is in need of a prompt confirmation of the Ambassador-at-Large position. We were pleased by the swift appointment by the Trump administration as the role is critical to the success of ICC's advocacy missions and to the well-being of religious minorities around the world. Gov. Brownback has voiced his strong commitment to the work and recognizes its impact for not only the affected groups, but also the lasting impact for national security. We are eager for the Senate to confirm his appointment."
