A new Pew study has revealed that more Christians are beginning to believe that gays should be accepted by society.

The Christian Post reports that the study, which surveyed 35,000 Americans, questioning them on religious and social issues, revealed that 54 percent of those who identified as Christian believe society should accept homosexuals.

In 2007, homosexuality was not nearly as accepted, especially by those who claim to be Christian.

The new study found that 70 percent of Catholics now accept homosexuality, up from 58 percent, 39 percent of Mormons accept homosexuality, up from 26 percent, and 51 percent of black Protestants accept homosexuality, up from 24 percent.

"Despite attempts to paint religious people as monolithically opposed to LGBT rights, that's just not the case, and these numbers prove that," Jay Brown, the head of research and education at Human Rights Campaign Foundation, stated.

The study also found that millennials are much more likely than older adults to accept gays, and that millennials have played a major role in the cultural shift to accept homosexuality.

Not surprisingly, the study also found that those with no religious affiliation were the most accepting of homosexuality. Eighty-three percent said society should accept gays.
