Six people were killed Sunday (July 5) when a suicide bomber detonated a bomb at a church in northeastern Nigeria. Reuters reports the attack occurred in Potiskum, and was preceded in the week by numerous Boko Haram attacks that resulted in over 200 deaths.

According to Al Jazeera, the suicide bombing occurred at Redeemed Christian Church of God. The attacker entered the church disguised as a worshipper and detonated the explosives strapped to his body, killing himself, four worshippers and the pastor.

Witness Garba Manu said, “I saw him walked into the church and he didn't raise any suspicion.”

Officials suspect Boko Haram to be behind the attack, as the group has struck in Potiskum in the past. The terrorist organization has recently increased the number of attacks in Nigeria and the surrounding countries after new President Muhammadu Buhari vowed to stop the group’s violence.

Buhari’s spokesman, Femi Adesina, said that Nigeria would likely be willing to negotiate with Boko Haram if they were willing to cooperate.

"Most wars, however furious or vicious, often end around the negotiation table. So, if Boko Haram opts for negotiation, the government will not be averse to it," Adesina said.
