Twenty-three Christian families were reportedly unable to escape from Raqqa and are now trapped in the ISIS stronghold. The families are now facing Islamic extremism and will be forced to pay ISIS’ “protection tax.”

Some Christians were unable to flee due to finances; others could not leave because poor health or old age prevented travel.

The Christian Post reports that the families will be subject to the protection tax of $535 in a few days. Some of the families will not be able to afford to pay and be evicted from their homes.

ISIS also continues to implement strict Sharia law in the region and has converted Raqqa’s churches into offices for the promotion of Islamic extremism.

Munir S. Kakish, chairman of the Council of Local Evangelical Churches in the Holy Land said,

"In my opinion this is a very grave situation. No western leader is moving to stop such a tragedy but they offer only empty words with no actions.”
