Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is once again highlighting the need to ban refugees from countries with ties to Islamic extremism after terror attacks occurred in multiple U.S. locations over the weekend.

TheBlaze.com reports that Cruz, a former 2016 Republican presidential candidate, had previously introduced the Terrorist Refugee Infiltration Prevention Act of 2015, which would have prevented refugees from countries with ties to Islamic extremism from coming to the U.S.

In a recent statement to the Washington Free Beacon, Cruz reiterated the importance of enacting laws to protect U.S. citizens from possible infiltration of terrorists.

Cruz called on Congress “to prevent Americans who have travelled abroad for training from returning here and to stop the flow of refugees from hotbeds of terrorism in the Middle East that President Obama is determined to bring into our country.”

“As we confront this new phase, we must avoid the trap of misconceiving these attacks as isolated incidents somehow disconnected from the larger ideological struggle against jihad,” he continued. “It is past time to take off the blinders and call the enemy what it is: radical Islamic terrorism engaged in a coordinated campaign designed to disrupt our very way of life.”

Cruz’s statement comes after 29 people were injured when an Afghan-born man with possible ties to Islamic extremist groups in the Middle East planted a bomb in New York City’s Chelsea neighborhood.

This man, 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami, is thought to be responsible for planting other bombs in New York City and New Jersey over the weekend.

There was also a stabbing that took place in a Minnesota mall on Saturday for which the Islamic State terrorist group took responsibility.

Cruz concluded that “We can’t overcome our enemies by pretending they don’t exist, and undermining our first line of defenders. Only together, clear-eyed and determined, can we defeat this foe.”
