Elite military units are deferring to the pro-Russian side in Ukraine reports ABC News.

On Wednesday, Ukrainian pro-Russian gunmen entered the city of Slovyansk on army vehicles flying Russian flags. A soldier reported that the men were a part of the 25th Brigade of Ukraine’s air force, a formerly anti-separatist group.

Another group of separatists invaded the City Hall building of Donetsk on at 10 a.m. local time. The men were masked and armed reports The Washington Post, but allowed city workers to enter the building.

The recent occurrences add to the tension that has been building in the nation between the pro-Western and pro-Russian bodies.

Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has expressed his belief that Ukraine is on the verge of civil war, but Ukraine and the United States accuse Putin of encouraging the separatists’ actions.

Acting Ukrainian President Oleksandr Turchynov is now implementing an operation to stop separatists from protesting inside government buildings reports US News. He says the operation “will be conducted step by step, responsibly, carefully.”
