Thousands of Christians took part in a sunrise Easter service at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. on Sunday.

Nearly 1,700 believers, both young and old, woke up early for the event and gathered on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial while it was still dark out.

The event included uplifting praise music, prayer, and a message by Pastor Amos Dodge of Capital Church in Leesburg, Virginia.

"19 centuries, now we push into 20, have come and gone and he is the central figure of the human race," said Dodge, speaking of Christ’s central place in the history of the world.

"All the armies that have ever marched. All the navies that have ever sailed. All the parliaments that have ever sat. All the kings that have ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of man on earth as much as this one solitary life," he added.

Some attendees of the event said they come every year to take part in the worship service.

Ninety-nine-year-old Clarice Bailey traveled all the way from Beckley, West Virginia for the past 14 years to attend the sunrise service.

"It is encouraging and uplifting," she said.

Another attendee of the event, Virginia resident Haendel Paul, explained the significance of Easter: "To me, it means God is risen and for all the things he has done for so many people...I'm grateful and this is what Easter is about...being here and celebrating the name of Jesus," he said.
