Time Magazine named Ebola caregivers as its 2014 Person of the Year.

Those caregivers include doctors, nurses, researchers and volunteers who worked to combat the Ebola virus after the West African outbreak. So far, nearly 18,000 people have been infected with Ebola and about 6,300 have died.

“The global health system is nowhere close to strong enough to keep us safe from infectious disease, and ‘us’ means everyone, not just those in faraway places where this is one threat among many that claim lives every day,” Time Managing Editor Nancy Gibbs wrote Wednesday in the announcement. “The rest of the world can sleep at night because a group of men and women are willing to stand and fight.”

There will be five magazine covers including Ebola survivor Dr. Kent Brantly, Dr. Jerry Brown, nurse aide Salome Karwah, Doctors without Borders volunteer Ella Watson-Stryker and ambulance team supervisor Foday Galla.

“For tireless acts of courage and mercy, for buying the world time to boost its defenses, for risking, for persisting, for sacrificing and saving, the Ebola fighters are TIME’s 2014 Person of the Year,” Gibbs wrote.

The Ferguson protestors were named to the No. 2 spot and Russian President Vladimir Putin was named to the No. 3 spot in the magazine.
