President Donald Trump announced his nominee for the Supreme Court last night (Jan. 31). He chose conservative-leaning Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Neil Gorsuch.

Trump vowed during his presidential campaign to nominate a Justice “in the mold of Justice Antonin Scalia,” and many conservatives praised Gorsuch’s nomination as precisely that.

Gorsuch is pro-life and has been vocal about his opposition for assisted suicide. He is also known as a Constitutional originalist and has been praised for his gifted writing. Gorsuch is rather young for a Supreme Court Justice (49) which means that, if he is confirmed, conservative principles could rule the Court for many years. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, a former rival of Trump, pointed out that the president followed through on his campaign promise to nominate a conservative justice by nominating Gorsuch.

Of Gorsuch himself, Cruz had this high praise:

“I Think Judge Gorsuch is a home run. He has a decade of proven experience on the court of appeals of being faithful to the Constitution, following the law, protecting the Bill of Rights and our fundamental liberties, and I think that record will yield a swift confirmation in the United States Senate.”

Sarah Isgur Flores, a spokeswoman for Attorney General Jeff Session even stated,"Christmas just came early for conservatives.”

Democrats, however, were not pleased with Gorsuch’s nomination. Many Congressional Democrats say they will do all they can to block Gorsuch’s confirmation.

Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN) tweeted:

Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) recalled the Republicans treatment of President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland, and said Democrats should treat Gorsuch the same way.

The Democrats may resort to a filibuster to block Gorsuch’s nomination, but according to Cruz, “The Democrats are not going to succeed in filibustering the Supreme Court nominee. All procedural options are on the table. The bottom line is we will confirm a strong conservative to replace Justice Scalia.”
