A typhoon blew through the central Philippines Sunday, displacing about one million people. Typhoon Hagupit stomped out communication and knocked over trees and houses.

The typhoon had been a category 5 storm, but slowed to a category 2 typhoon before making landfall.

“Structural damage was caused mostly by wind, not by storm surge,” said presidential spokeswoman Abigail Valte.

So far, there are reports that at least five people were killed in Eastern Samar and IIoilo province, but officials haven’t yet released an official number.

Hagupit, which means “lash” in Filipino, moved northwest at 6 mph with winds at 86 mph and gusts up to 105 mph, the Phlippine weather bureau PAGASA said.

Last year’s Typhoon Haiyan, which hit the same area, killed more than 7,000 people in the central Philippines.

Samaritan’s Purse has already readied supplies and help to send to the hardest hit areas. Supplies include food, medicine, water and shelter.

“Please remember the people of the Philippines. Your prayers and financial support are vital and appreciated. We will do all we can to help in the Name of Jesus Christ.”
