Ukraine: At Least 10 Killed in Shelling of School

Ten people died Wednesday after shells struck a Ukrainian school playground and public transit van. No children were killed in the attacks, according to government officials.

The shelling started at 10 a.m. on the first day of school. The school boasts about 50 to 60 students from 8 to 10 years old.

Killed in the attacks were a biology teacher and a father of one of the children at the school. Also reported dead was a separatist fighter.

Another six bodies were found dead in the public transit van and near streets around it. Nine other people were wounded, of which seven were taken to a nearby hospital.

The attacks come from Russian-supported rebels fighting against the pro-Western government in Kiev, according to city officials. However, rebels say the attack was from the government. Rebels also reported that 12 people actually died in the shelling.

Thus far, about 3,500 people have been killed in the fighting, according to the United Nations.
