University of Missouri President Cites Scripture in Resignation Speech

University of Missouri President Tim Wolfe resigned from his position on Monday, following the demands of students, faculty and staff who argued that he did not satisfactorily respond to multiple incidents of racial abuse on campus.

According to Charisma News, trouble began at the University of Missouri when a group of students shouted racially-charged insults at Missouri Students Association president Payton Head. Wolfe did not strongly respond to the incident, which prompted protests on campus. Mizzou grad student Jonathan Butler went on a hunger strike until Wolfe stepped down and the university’s football team refused to play or practice in solidarity with Butler.

In his resignation speech, Wolfe said, "I take full responsibility for this frustration and I take full responsibility for the inaction that has occurred."

“My decision to resign comes out of love, not hate.”

Wolfe then went on to quote Psalm 46:1, a passage that he said gave him strength during the difficult time.

"The Lord is my refuge and my strength, my very present help in trouble,” Wolfe quoted.

“We need to use my resignation — please, please — use this resignation to heal, not to hate, as we move forward today for a brighter tomorrow.”
