Winter Olympics Begin, Christians Rally

Bob Provost, President of the Slavic Gospel Association, is asking believers to pray for the Olympics. The 2014 Winter Olympics are being held in Sochi, Russia, a southern city near the Black Sea and only a few hundred miles from the sites of recent bombings and terrorist activities, according to Provost and reported by Mission Network News. Many Christian organizations located in Russia have been warned to cease evangelizing in Sochi during the Games, and leaders have also pleaded with warring factions to refrain from violence during this time when the country is flooded with thousands of visitors. Provost shares, “It is uncertain whether the very heavy security will pose difficulties for the peaceful missionaries, who are intent on proclaiming the love of the Lord Jesus Christ to all who will hear. And we trust in the One who declares, ‘Behold, I have put before you an open door which no one can shut’ (Revelation 3:8).” World News Service reports that many Olympians this year have been outspoken about their Christian faith, and their desire to compete for the glory of Christ.
