Despite claims from U.S. forces that a rescue effort to Mount Sinjar may not be needed, Yazidi leaders are reporting that tens of thousands of Yazidis are still trapped on the mountain.

This week, the U.S. military said that there were only a few thousand left refugees left on the mountain after many had escaped.

“It’s better now than it had been, but it’s just not true that all of them are safe — they are not,” Vian Dakhil, a Yazidi leader, said. “Especially on the south side of the mountain, the situation is very terrible. There are still people who are not getting any aid.”

Dakhil said there may be as many as 80,000 Yazidis still on the mountain.

The United Nations also assessed the mountain this week.

Kieran Dwyer, UN spokesman said, “We’re not doing a military assessment, we’re doing a humanitarian assessment...The crisis on the mountain will not be over until everyone comes off in a safe and secure manner."

There have been air drops of food and water to help the Yazidis. The Yazidis fled after fighting started and ISIS took control of parts of Iraq.
