Personal development is certainly not wrong, but it is misleading—and it can be very disappointing—to make it our preeminent goal.
Maurice Sendak, who just died, doesn’t seem, at first glance, to have much to teach Christians. But this atheist with a cynical outlook and a foul mouth saw something of the fallen glory of the universe we followers of Jesus sometimes ignore.
Our goal is to remove every barrier that exists between such persons and their acceptance of the scandal of the cross … except the scandal of the cross!
