It took a lot because one of the things I discovered in my own search of natural medicine is that it is ripe with heresy. I am very grounded in my faith, and I really feel a love and compassion for health practitioners who want to help, but I’m also very aware of the dangers for people who desire healing, but may not have a solid faith. I wanted to present natural healing in a way that is safe for the Christian. Some of my experiences have been the only contact New-Agers have had with Christians that wasn’t judgmental or what they imagined. I feel it’s a ministry for me, but I have learned so much from them about the way God created the human body to work in harmony.

Do you have a favorite character? Why?

I think my favorite was Poppy in "Calm, Cool & Adjusted" because she really struggled with what it is to be a Christian who doesn’t fit into the normal parameters of being a cultural Christian in America. I enjoyed exploring her issues and trying to reconcile what she felt called to do, with what was expected of her.

Are there any other new projects on the horizon?

Yes, I am working on a book about a Hollywood hairstylist called "Split Ends." It’s about the images we extend versus discovering who we really are in Christ.

Who was the person who influenced you the most with your writing?

There are so many, most of them, classics, but in the field of Christian publishing, definitely Jane Peart. Her books made me feel! I discovered her, after trying to read many secular books and just being disgusted with the content, and unable to really identify with the heroines. Jane’s heroines were plucky and identifiable without being too sweet that they didn’t make mistakes.

What advice would you give to a person trying to become a fiction writer?

First, I would tell them to read. A lot! Then, I would tell them to think about what inspires them and what they want to say – then learn craft and put it all together in novel format.

What were your favorite books as a child?

I didn’t read much as a child, but in high school, I became an avid fan of Jane Austen. I remember being forced to read Hemmingway, and wondering why anyone saw genius in his depressing view of life. In my sophomore year of high school, we got into a discussion in class about "The Old Man and the Sea" and I remember adamantly saying, “It’s a 250-page book about a man catching a fish! I don’t care what the point is, it was boring.” Needless to say, I had a bit of an attitude.

What message would you like your readers to take away from "Calm, Cool & Adjusted"?

That Christians do not come in one package. God has created all of us to do a specific ministry on this earth and rather than judging others, we should be ensuring that we’re fulfilling our own call.

What is your goal or mission as a writer?

To get better. To write a story as good as anything out there, without being offensive. To do what it is He called me to do so that one day He might say, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”
