Artist:  Red
Title:  End of Silence Deluxe Edition
Label:  Essential Records

I see the proliferation of deluxe edition albums as a bit of a mixed bag, to tell the truth. Previous buyers feel beat, and the projects don’t always seem to warrant a bonus release. This is not one of ‘em, though.  The initial album was spectacular on its own, and Essential was wise to leave it untouched. Why mess with success, and by success, I mean raw intelligence, expressive creativity, and thoughtful attention to detail. The satisfying DVD package here features an hour of overall content.

The complex sound of Red is as evocative and potent as their fiery name implies, shrewdly mixing ambience and aggression into a thick sonic stew that grabs you by the throat. The focus of the DVD is the seven-song concert, filmed in Nashville for “Red Nation,” the band’s rabid online fans, and captured well in high quality video and pristine audio. The blistering concert is enhanced by restrained video effects that still manage to retain as much of the “live” feel as possible. The tracks covered in concert footage include thundering wailer “Wasting Time,” a moving acoustic rendition of “Pieces,” and the snarling “Hide,” as well as new radio single “Let Go.”  Front-man Michael Barnes rides the waves of blistering alt-rock like he was born to it, pouring a desperate passion into the teeth-baring closer, “Breathe into Me.”

Special Features on the DVD include:  the “Breathe into Me” music video, a brief, behind-the-scenes documentary (and by brief I mean seven minutes, count ‘em), a Photo Montage set to a studio track, and some fun tour videos from the road. In the end, you have to judge for yourself the value of the Deluxe Edition. Personally, I’m not wild about them, but this one won’t disappoint you.
