He Came from Nazareth
by Berni Dymet
Mark 1:9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
I was reading the Bible the other day and one little sentence struck me -in Mark's Gospel, the first Chapter, ninth verse.
It says this, In those days, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan river.
Now chances are that you live in a different part of the world to me. But where ever we live - we can all think of a place - a town or a suburb that is just the pits. The sort of place that - well nothing good comes out of it. I'm sure you can think of a place like that.
Well in those days - in the first century - if you were one of the religious power brokers with a corner office in the temple in Jerusalem, the place you would have thought of was Nazareth in Galilee. The absolute pits. And yet…God chose for His Son - Jesus - to grow up in that place. Born into a poor family, trained as a carpenter, growing up in Nazareth. Not Jerusalem, not the centre of power.
Have you ever wondered - what does that say about God?
