Friends Stab You in the Front

by Berni Dymet

Prov. 27:6   Well meant are the wounds a friend inflicts, but profuse are the kisses of an enemy.

There’s an old adage that whilst enemies stab you in the back – friends … friends stab you in the front.  And that always make me smile, because as I look back on my life – it’s some of the direct criticisms that I’ve received from friends that have helped me to grow up.

After all, if you trust someone, if they’ve been loyal and they’ve stuck by you and they’ve served you well, they have a license – don’t they – to be direct.  I think that’s good to have trusted advisors.  We all need that.

People sometimes think that religion – that’s not a word I like – religion is about judgment and condemnation.  Well, religion may well be.  But God – God is in the business of calling us home to Him.  He’s in the reconciliation business.  And like any good friend – He’s prepared to be direct.

Seems to me the difference between an enemy and an honest friend, between religion and God – is their intention, the end game.
