When the Fig Tree Doesn't Blossom
by Berni Dymet
Hab. 3:17 Though the fig tree does not blossom, and no fruit is on the vines; though the produce of the olive fails and the fields yield no food; though the flock is cut off from the fold and there is no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will exult in the God of my salvation. GOD, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, and makes me tread upon the heights.
Have you ever noticed, some days, it feels like nothing's going right? Things that should be working, aren't. People who should be standing by us - just aren't.
And then, what we really want to do is have a good old whine. We want to blame other people and circumstances … even God. And maybe we're entitled - but the thing I've finally figured out, is that grumbling and complaining - well it just doesn't make things better. It doesn't work.
And then I stumbled across something that does. It's from a guy with a kind of weird name - Habakkuk - and this is what he said:
Even though the fig tree doesn't blossom, and there's no fruit on the vines; even though the produce of the olive fails and the fields yield no food; and even though the flock is cut off from the fold and there is no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD.
It may sound crazy… but you know something, it actually works.
