LOVING MONEY

Read: 1 Timothy 6

Key Verse: “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” - 1 Timothy 6:10

This is one of the most misunderstood verses in the entire Bible. This passage does not say that money is evil. Money is a blessing. It is the love of money that is the sin. Being wealthy is not wrong, in fact, having financial means gives you many opportunities to bless other people. If someone loves money, it opens the door for materialism, selfishness, stinginess, hoarding, deceiving, taking advantage of other people, losing sight of an eternal perspective, idolatry, and pride.

Money can be a false security in life. Money is a cruel god. Money battles can split a family. Money can become consuming and distracting. Those who love many have many griefs. They are never satisfied. There is no real contentment. Wealth includes responsibility to bless other people. All money belongs to God. You are merely a steward, not an owner. Have you ever struggled with the love of money? How did you come back to your senses?
