Thirsty, Thirsty - Always Thirsty

by Berni Dymet

John 7:37-38a On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink.

When I was in the Army, we used to go out and exercise for weeks at a time.  Fighting an imaginary enemy and learning the art of war.
Back then, the army was into water rationing.  Two water bottles per man per day perhaps.  For shaving, washing, cleaning your teeth, cooking and drinking.  In the hot summers, with all the heavy physical work that battles entail, it was never enough.

Many a time, we'd finish an attack up a steep hill, or you'd be digging a deep trench and all you wanted to do was guzzle down a whole water bottle full.

Of course you couldn't do that.  And then I'd close my eyes and imagine what it would be like to go swimming in a nice cool river.

hen you're that thirsty, what you really want is water in abundance.  You want to be filled to overflowing.

Jesus said: "If anyone is thirsty, come to me and drink.  And whoever believes in me - rivers of living water will flow from their hearts."

Rivers.
