An Odd Family
by Berni Dymet
Mark 3:33 And he replied, "Who are my mother and my brothers?"
There was a time when Jesus was out preaching and surrounded by crowds - as He often was - and someone said to Him, your mother and your brothers are outside. And he looked around and said "who are my mother, who are my brothers" - and He pointed to the people that were with Him and said "Here they are - anyone who does my Father's will is my mother and my brother and my sister."
What an odd response….but you know Jesus saw things so differently. He saw things - and still does - through the eyes of God. And my hunch is that what He's really on about with that odd response is making this point - that when we commit our lives to Him, to follow Him, to do His Father's will - then we're family.
I feel so inadequate some days - but I just take one step after the other and do my best to do His will. And it seems - well, so ordinary.
And then Jesus comes along amidst this mundane ordinariness of life, taps you on the shoulder and whispers "you - you're family".
