Winners and Losers

Matt 26:51-53 Suddenly, one of those with Jesus put his hand on his sword, drew it, and struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his ear. Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place; for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?
Let's face it - we love to win. We're conditioned to win. And not just winning, but being seen to win. But sometimes, sometimes winning isn't winning at all. When Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, one of His disciples drew a sword and sliced off the ear of the slave of the high priest. A reasonable thing to do it would have seemed - after all - He was protecting God's own Son.
But Jesus - Jesus admonished the disciple healed the slave and allowed Himself to be arrested - even though as God's Son He had the power to stop it … and then He went to a brutal death on a cross.
It looked like the biggest defeat in all of history - this miracle working Messiah who claimed to be the Son of God - killed on a Cross.
But it turned out to be the biggest victory of all time - a victory that gives you and me the opportunity of eternal life.
Sometimes, winning isn't winning at all.
