Daily Disciples Devotional - December 30

December 30

My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and make music. Awake, my soul! Awake, harp and lyre! I
will awaken the dawn. I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is
your love, reaching to the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let
your glory be over all the earth.
Psalm 57:7-11

A few years ago I was in a Christian book store browsing through the books when all of a sudden I began to hear this
beautiful song. It was as though this song kept getting louder and louder. I never pay much attention to the music that
plays in the background in places. Many of us get kind of immune to the noise because it is in every shop or restaurant
we go in, but this time was different. The words of this song combined with the music seemed to grab my heart.

I went to the one of the clerks and asked about the song that was playing. She enthusiastically told me about the band
and their new CD. The band was Mercy Me and the song was “How Great is Your Love.” I eagerly bought the CD and
began playing it almost non-stop. I realized that every song on that CD had scripture as the major component of the
lyrics. Today’s verses are the main chorus for “How Great is Your Love.” As I learned those songs and sang them, I was
praising and worshiping the Lord through singing His Word back to Him. My heart was filled with joy every time I sang
those songs.

To this day, I keep that CD close by and play it often, not because it is just a great sounding compilation of music and
songs, but because it is filled with God’s Word. It is filled with songs of praise and worship that fill my heart and soul
every time I listen to it. In our ministry at Daily Disciples, we are constantly cautioning people on what they watch and
listen to. What goes into our minds is what will permeate our thoughts, especially songs and music because we sing
them over and over. Why not put God’s Word in your thoughts and fill your mind with His love and peace?

Take time today and pay attention to what you are listening to. Personally, I love all types of music and for several
years, I enjoyed talk radio. But, I realized that those things took more from me than they gave back. In listening to
praise songs, I am uplifted in my spirit and soul as I exalt the name of Jesus, my Lord, who is worthy of all my praise.
Give it a try and see how you feel. I highly recommend the band, Mercy Me, but there are many others who beautifully
put the Word of God into their music. You will be blessed.
