You’re a Child of Light [Part 3]

Are you ready for some good news?

The wrath of God is against the sons of disobedience, but, in Christ, you are sons of obedience. There is no wrath for the child of God – only blessing!

Today’s Text: “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light(Ephesians 5:6–8, ESV)

We’ve been exploring the words of Paul in Ephesians 5 where he says the “wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience” and then exhorts Christians “do not become partners with them, for at one time you were darkness but now you are light in the Lord.” The idea of the wrath of God is detestable to the current culture and has caused much consternation among unbelievers. However, we have been seeing that, plainly, God is not a God of wrath, but of love. God’s anger and jealousy are proof of His love. The Christian is exhorted not to be afraid of God, but to be “wise.”

When I speak about the perfect love of God casting out fear, people often inquire: “Don’t we need some fear?” For example, isn’t fear of heights important? It keeps us from stepping out onto risky ledges.

While fear might keep me from foolish risks, it is a better, higher way to be guided by wisdom. We don’t need fear of heights, we need wisdom to limit undue risks. If you see a rickety wire draped between two buildings and you decide not to walk across it, your decision could be from fear or from wisdom. You might say, “Yikes, I’m terrified of heights, I won’t walk the wire.” Or, you might say, “I’m not particularly skilled in high wire walking and, since there is no compelling reason for the risk, I certainly shall not walk it.” The heart of wisdom doesn’t live in fear of God or in fear of the world. The heart of wisdom sees the folly of poor choices and the advantage of wise choices.

There is no wrath in God toward His children. Thus, there shall be no fear in His children toward God. And that’s the gospel!
