Daniel and the Dynamics of Church and Culture [Part 3]

Are you ready for some good news?

America might seem to be abandoning God’s church; but God isn’t abandoning the church in America. These strange, immoral times bring opportunity for the true Gospel to be proclaimed.

Today’s text: “When Daniel knew that the document had been signed, he went to his house where he had windows in his upper chamber open toward Jerusalem. He got down on his knees three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God, as he had done previously.(Daniel 6:10, ESV)

I had a dream a couple of years ago that I think was from God. In the dream, there was a wicked man who I somehow knew had an assault weapon and that he was going to harm people with it. I bravely extricated the weapon from the man by overpowering him (this is how you know it was a dream) and, in so doing, I inadvertently lightly wounded the bad guy, leaving him with a broken nose and some blood on his face. The wicked man cried foul, complained to all the bystanders that he was never going to harm anyone, and who was I to come and attack him like that? Very soon, the whole crowd turned against me with criticism and scorn, accusing me of being overbearing and insensitive to the innocent man. I was condemned for being intolerant.

When I awoke, I told the dream to my wife and asked why in the world I would have a dream like that. She laughed and said, “Boy, you must really be feeling unappreciated! You save everybody, but instead of getting thanks, you get booed.” We chuckled, but now I see the dream in a deeper light. In a culture that lauds tolerance over truth, how do I proclaim truth without it being rejected as intolerant?

The radio broadcasts this week are part preaching and part studio conversation. The topic is church and culture. The source material is the book of Daniel. Daniel experienced favor in Babylonian culture. He also experienced the lions’ den! There is no simple answer for how Christians should respond to a pagan culture. Sometimes Daniel was used by God to affect the culture and sometimes Daniel pulled away from it.

I’ve written a booklet on the subject of Daniel and how a Christian is to live in an unchurched world. It highlights an excellent book by Tim Keller on the subject. Just visit the website to get your free copy.

When you follow God in today’s culture, you might be applauded or you might be scorned. But it’s never wrong to do the right thing. It’s never wrong to follow God no matter what. And that’s the Gospel!
