Accepting Blessing, Rejecting Curse [Part I]

Are you ready for some good news?

In Christ, you can drink in every blessing and confidently reject every curse!

Today’s text: “Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, a curse that is causeless does not alight.” - (Proverbs 26:2, ESV)

Our current radio broadcast series is about the earth shaking power of the blessing. We’re learning about the spiritual power of speaking a faith-filled vision over others’ lives.

Today, we shift the light toward our reactions to others. In this world, there will be those who affirm you and those who condemn you. Because of the glories of the gospel, you can develop a spiritual sensitivity that enables you to only let the blessing in your heart while utterly rejecting the condemnation.

In Numbers 13, when the 12 spies returned with their negative, fearful report on the Promised Land, the hearts of the people melted like wax. When the faithless spies declared, “We are not able to go up against the people for they are stronger than we are,” it was a pronouncement over the people of God: “You aren’t capable – you can’t do it.”  You can’t -- that’s the voice of curse.

Curse isn’t so much a magic spell stirred in some witch’s pot as it is the voice of fear forecasting the opposite of God’s Word. God had given the land to the people. The only thing that could stop their conquest was their own fear and disbelief.

Later, when Joshua led the people into the Promised Land, nothing had changed. The enemies in the land were the same. The land was the same. But Joshua blessed the people. “Truly the Lord has given all the land into our hands….” You can conquer the land. You can. You can. You can. That’s the voice of blessing.

Succinctly put, curse is an ungodly, negative forecast that, when believed and received, leads toward the negative vision proclaimed.

Proverbs 26:2 is importantly reassures that a curse without cause cannot find a home. If there is no substance, no legal reason for a curse, then the curse can’t land.

Deuteronomy declares that whoever hangs on the tree is cursed. When you accept Christ, a great exchange takes place. He becomes your sin; you become His righteousness. He takes the curse; you take the blessing. Paul put it plainly: “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us…” (Gal. 3).

In Christ, curse has no cause in you. You are utterly redeemed from the curse and you are eternally positioned for blessing. Therefore, you can say, “yes” to every blessing and “no” to every curse. And that’s the Gospel!
