Bless Those Who Curse You [Part 1]

Are you ready for some good news?

When you are persecuted, you can bless. You really can.

Today’s Text: ““But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either.(Luke 6:27–29, ESV)

Not long ago a video of two little girls and a boy went viral. It’s precious and far reaching in what it teaches. Two little girls are talking to a little boy in their cute, toddler voices.

Little girl: “It’s raining outside.”
Little boy: “My mommy said it’s sprinkling.”
Little girl: “My mommy said it’s raining.”
Little boy: “No, it’s sprinkling!”

The dispute continues until frustration mounts. The children want to clobber one another but they restrain with every fiber of will power they can muster.

The little boy reaches toward the girl’s face but brings his hands back. The little girl brings her finger up towards the boy’s face but restrains from touching. Meanwhile, the dispute continues: “It’s raining.” “No, it’s sprinkling.”

Finally, unable to restrain herself anymore, the little girl extends her finger and pokes the boy right in the center of his chest and says, “It’s raining!”

In utter dismay, the little lad suddenly crumbles and cries out, “You poked my heart!”

It’s just darling. And it’s oh so telling of the human soul.

When others persecute you, curse you or malign you, they’re poking your heart!

When someone pokes your heart, it hurts. But you don’t have to poke back.

Here’s the powerful principle: you always reap what you sow. If you sow orange seeds, you’ll get oranges. If you sow apple seeds, you’ll get apples. But you’ll never get apples from orange seeds. If such is the way of nature, how much more is it true of things in the spirit?

If you sow curse, you’ll reap curse. If you sow blessing, you’ll reap blessing. When someone pokes your heart, you don’t have to poke back. Blessing is more powerful than curse. And that’s the Gospel!
