The Beauty of Balance [Part 2]

Are you ready for some good news?

Your life in Christ flourishes through a dynamic balance of seemingly opposite truths.

Today’s Texts: “That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. And the whole city was gathered together at the door. And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons…. And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.”(Mark 1:32–37, ESV)

On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was.(Mark 4:35, ESV)

A teenager brought home a report card containing all F’s and one D. The exasperated father pleaded for an answer: “Son, what have you been doing?”

The boy’s response was classic: “I guess I’ve been focusing too much on one subject.”

Life’s all about balance!

Balance is what keeps you safe.

When I was a kid, I loved to lean my chair back at the kitchen table while we were eating. My mother repeatedly warned me that the chair could fall backwards and, if it did, I could be injured. But, ignoring such a restrictive and foolish motherly mandate, I continued in my practice of leaning backward in the kitchen chair until, finally, one day I fell hard, requiring an emergency room visit and stitches. I have the scar on my chin to remind me of the dangers of losing your balance.

There is a reason that a chair has four legs rather than two. The front two legs provide balance against the back two. There is nothing wrong with the back two legs of the chair. They are good legs worthy of good use. But if you only have the back two legs you are likely to fall and get hurt. You can lean back in the chair only if you know that you can be counter-balanced by the front two legs.

All healthy life and productivity depends on the synthesis of the seemingly opposite.

Seedtime and harvest…. Male and female…. Winter and summer…. Tears and laughter…. Celebration and contemplation…. Word and Spirit…. Heart and Mind…. Work and rest…. Faith and action…. Grace and truth…. Humility and boldness…. Gifts and fruit…. Spirit and intellect…. Awe and intimacy….

In Christ there is fullness of life through dynamic balance. And that’s the Gospel!
