You’re No Imposter [Part 2]
Are you ready for some good news?
You have been qualified.
Today’s Text: “May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy, giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,” (Colossians 1:11–13, ESV)
I’ve always been a little too concerned about credentials and qualifications. I’m less concerned now. But I used to be quick to pick up a book and look first for the author’s qualifications.
Where did he go to school?
What kind of degree does she have?
What endorsements and experience does he have?
Of course, it’s important to have the training, experience and qualifications necessary to do certain tasks (think about who you want doing your surgery or packing your parachute). And training is important for ministry.
But what does it take to be qualified spiritually?
Paul makes it clear in the opening chapter of Colossians: “… giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints of light.” There’s only one qualification – being in Christ.
The Colossian church was riddled with the influence of ancient heresies that told believers that only those with special “knowledge” or certain ascetic practices were the true Christians. In other words, you need Jesus plus some other qualifications.
When you accept Christ, you are declared forgiven and reckoned as righteous. You are made into an heir and co-heir with Christ. Nothing else is needed. No other merit but Christ’s is needed. No other accomplishment but Christ’s is needed. No other name or practice or religious institution is needed.
Get training in whatever areas of life and ministry that God calls you to. Training is good. But don’t ever forget – in Christ you are fully qualified already. And that’s the Gospel!
