The Source of the Power

Luke 9:37-43

When someone has a convulsion, we all react. Seeing someone thrust to the ground shakes us up. The uncontrolled fall can generate severe bruising, or in the ancient world, where fires were often present for cooking, serious burns. Today there are medications that can help control seizures, but in the first century there were none.

As we’ve been tracking Jesus’ Galilean ministry, we’ve seen His power to miraculously cure physical diseases and to set individuals free from the destructive forces of demonic possession. Luke 9:37 -43 continues this emphasis telling a compelling story about a dad whose only son has intense seizures—seizures that leave his precious son bruised and broken.

"Now it happened the next day after the Transfiguration when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd had gathered. Look. A man from the crowd yelled, 'Teacher, I beg You. Look upon my son with compassionate concern. He's my only son, and a spirit seizes him. He suddenly screams, shakes in convulsions, and foams at the mouth. He’s hardly ever free from this, and it’s crushing him. I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.’ Jesus responded, ‘O unbelieving and crooked generation! How long will I remain with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.’ While he was approaching, the demon threw him down into convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, cured the child, and returned him to his father. Everyone was overwhelmed by the grandeur of God.” Luke 9:37-43

Jesus does get impatient when our failure to believe and pray prolongs suffering resulting from demonic oppression, especially when a child is involved.

LORD, today I pray for those close to me who face the threat of seizures. Thanks for medications you have enabled doctors to discover and perfect that help control them. Also set free those whose condition is not based in the physical but the life-threatening power of the Evil One. Help me to grow in the power of faith and prayer relying on Your Son’s authority, especially as I prepare for our ministry in Kenya where sometimes medical help isn’t available.
