This summer in Texas there have been some strange reports about cobras on the loose. In Austin an eighteen-year-old was found dead in his car outside a Lowes. When they checked his collection of exotic pets, his monocled cobra was the only one missing. This snake fugitive is not playing the role of the “good guy” in Austin as police tell residents to be vigilant and to call 911 if they see the serpent.
If you’ve listened to Truth Encounter very long you know that the ultimate “bad character” in the Bible is the Serpent, God’s adversary. So when King David, the Lion of Judah who happens to be in the promised line that will generate the great promised Serpent Slayer, the one who will crush the Serpent’s head (Genesis 3:15), starts talking about “the venom of asps,” we need to pay attention. David is giving us powerful insights into the character, plans, and actions of those who have joined the Serpent in his attacks against God’s Anointed and His people.
“They sharpen their tongue like a serpent, and under their lips is the venom of asps. Protect me, O LORD, from the wicked man’s hands, guard me from the violent man, who schemes to trip my feet.” Psalm 140:3-4
LORD, murder is becoming so commonplace that another headline barely registers. Help me to be more vigilant when it comes to the danger of the Snake. The denial of a personal devil in our culture is so strong it’s easy for me to forget that his mission is still to murder and to destroy Your redemptive purpose to save those who trust Your Son. With David I cry out for protection from the Snake and protection for Your children. Help me to realize that the Apostle Paul was right when he used Psalm 140:3 to prove that all of us are sinners (Romans 3:13). I praise You that in the End You will not allow evil’s venomous tongue to win.
