Foundations And Floods

Luke 6:46-49

Like Israel, Texas knows about flash floods. A dry bed that you can drive your Tundra down one day suddenly turns into a deep and wide raging torrent. We’ve all seen the newscasts of houses swept off their foundations and families crying out for rescue. We’ve also seen those strong houses built on higher ground with deep foundations embedded in solid rock.

Jesus knows how to close a sermon. You’ve got to focus what you want your audience to do, remind them why they need to do it, and drive the point home with a vivid image they will never forget.

“Why do you call me Lord, Lord, but you don’t do what I say? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like. He is like a man who builds a house.  He digs and then digs deeper so that he can place the foundation on rock. Now when a flood comes and the river bursts upon that house, it is not strong enough to shake it because it was built well.

Now the one who hears but does not do, he is like a man who builds a house upon the ground without foundation. The river bursts upon it and immediately it collapses and the ruin of that house is great.” Luke 6:46-49

Lord, help me again to hear your words and build my life on doing what You say and not trying to maintain my own personal security by money and power. Help me not to be like the religious leaders who attacked when You showed healing mercy and be my Rock, the foundation I build everything on today.
