Like a Baby

Psalm 131

Cozette, my youngest grandchild, is not quiet when she’s hungry. But let her get her fill, and as she nestles in her mom’s arms, she becomes the picture of quiet rest. A fully nursed infant content in their mother’s arms is the image King David uses to describe his own internal state.

“But I have smoothed out and quieted my soul, like a baby content after nursing, like this baby, my soul rests.” Psalm 131:2

I often inflate my own importance. I lift up my eyes and look around at all my peers are doing and I begin to compare. Jealousy quickly begins to smolder, and prideful, I start to dream about all the “wondrous” things I will do to gain approval and attention in the competition of ministry. After all, the self-improvement gurus make millions telling us to “Lift up your eyes. See the potential. Dream your dream. Internalize it, and then go out and make it happen.”

King David gives me a different challenge. “Wait patiently for the LORD to work. Without Him you can do nothing. Humble yourself. Before Him you’re a nursing baby. Wait patiently and let Him move and provide.” Sounds a like the same kind of teaching I hear in the New Testament from the ultimate Teacher.

“Indeed, I’m telling you the truth, whoever does not receive the Kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.”  Mark 10:14

LORD, humble me. Teach me to wait like David. He didn’t murder Saul even when he had the chance. He waited for You and Your time. When I read this psalm this morning, I realized my heart over the last several days has been far from contented. Move me to nurse on Your love and care.
